Free Shopify loyalty apps: what 'free' actually means

September 4, 2026

A free loyalty app can be a great way to test the idea. The catch is that 'free' in this category usually means 'free until you grow.' Here's how to read the fine print before you commit.

What free plans typically cover

Most free Shopify loyalty plans give you the basics: a points program, a simple widget, and the ability for customers to earn and redeem. That's often enough to validate whether loyalty moves the needle for your store before you spend anything.

The tradeoff is that the free tier is designed to get you started, not to run a mature program. Once you have real volume, you'll usually need to upgrade for features that matter at scale.

Where free plans commonly hit a wall

We won't quote specific competitors' limits here because those change frequently and we'd rather not give you stale numbers. But in this category, many free plans in their current form cap one or more of the following:

  • Order or customer volume. The free tier may stop counting orders or members after a set number per month. Hit that number and the program either pauses or you upgrade.
  • Referral programs. The feature that turns loyalty into acquisition is often behind a paid tier, even though referrals are one of the highest-ROI parts of a loyalty stack.
  • VIP tiers. Tiered earn multipliers and spend-based thresholds are commonly reserved for paid plans, which limits how much you can reward your best customers.
  • Branding and customization. Removing the app's own branding, changing widget colors, or matching your fonts may require an upgrade.
  • Support and integrations. Priority support, custom integrations, or advanced analytics often sit on higher tiers.

Always check the vendor's current pricing page before you decide. The free-plan details you read in a review from six months ago may not match what's live today.

When a free plan is the right call

If you're pre-revenue, running a side project, or just want to see whether customers care about points at all, a free plan is a rational place to start. You get data without spending money, and you can always migrate later.

The risk is building your launch around a free plan and then discovering the feature you need — say, referrals or VIP tiers — is gated behind a paid tier that costs significantly more than you budgeted. Plan for that transition from day one so you're not rebuilding the program three months in.

The Habit angle (stated honestly)

Habit does not have a free plan. We offer a 30-day free trial, and after that it's one flat $49/month price with every feature included: points, VIP tiers, referrals with fraud protection, automatic refund clawback, and custom branding. There are no order-count cliffs and no feature gates.

That model isn't for everyone. If you need a zero-dollar starting point, a free-plan competitor is the better fit. If you'd rather not worry about whether your next feature is included or whether a good month triggers a plan upgrade, our flat pricing is built for that.

What to do next

If you're comparing options, read our Habit vs. Smile.io comparison for a worked example of how a free-plan app stacks up against a flat-price one. Then check each vendor's live pricing page, including ours, before you install anything.
