Do you actually need a paid loyalty app?
October 2, 2026
Most advice on this question comes from loyalty app companies, and we're one of them. So here's the version we'd want to read: when a loyalty app pays off, when it doesn't, and what to check before you install one.
Start with your repeat purchase rate
Before adding points or tiers, look at how many of your customers already come back. Shopify Analytics shows your returning customer rate. That number tells you more about whether you need a loyalty app than any feature list.
If it's low because your store is new, or because you don't email customers after they buy, a loyalty app won't fix it. Points reward people who were already going to come back. They don't create demand on their own.
Do this first: set up a short post-purchase email flow in Shopify Email or Klaviyo. Thank the customer, remind them when it's time to reorder or suggest a product that goes with what they bought, and show what similar customers bought next. Give it a couple of months before adding a loyalty app on top.
The simplest version might be enough
A common piece of advice from merchants, not app vendors, is that many stores don't need a points program at all. Two things often do the job:
- A discount on the second order, sent automatically by email after the first purchase.
- A VIP email segment for your best customers, with early access to new products.
Both take an afternoon to set up and cost nothing extra. Customers don't have to understand a points system, which matters if most of your buyers are casual rather than devoted fans.
When a loyalty app is worth it
A dedicated app starts paying for itself when one or more of these is true:
- A good share of your revenue already comes from repeat customers, and you want to give them a reason to keep coming back.
- Your products get reordered on a rhythm: coffee, skincare, supplements, pet food, refills.
- You want VIP tiers or a referral program. These are hard to run by hand or with email alone, and they're where an app's automation earns its cost.
- You already pay for a loyalty app and its price jumped when your order volume grew, or the feature you need sits on a more expensive plan.
What to check before you install one
If you've decided you need an app, these are the things merchants most often wish they'd checked first:
- How the price changes as you grow. Many loyalty apps charge by orders per month, so a cheap plan at 300 orders can cost several times more at 2,000. Ask what you'd pay at double your current volume.
- How long setup takes. Some apps take weeks to configure. If you want something running this week, try the setup during the free trial, not after you've committed.
- What happens when an order is refunded. If points aren't taken back automatically, you'll be fixing balances by hand.
- Whether referral fraud protection is included. Referral programs attract people creating fake accounts to farm rewards. Check whether limits and alerts are built in or cost extra.
- How to cancel. Look for a cancel button inside the app rather than an email to support.
Where Habit fits
We built Habit for the stores in the "worth it" list above: one plan at $49/month with points, VIP tiers and referrals included, no order limit, automatic points reversal on refunds, referral fraud checks built in, and a one-click cancel. It installs in about 10 minutes. If you're not there yet, start with the email flow above. It's free, and it'll tell you whether loyalty is worth paying for.
To compare what each app would cost at your order volume, try our loyalty app price calculator. You can also read what "free" loyalty plans actually include.
